WordPress or a custom website? A comparison that saves you money

WordPress powers a large part of the internet and is a reasonable choice for many projects. But it is not always the cheapest or fastest path — it depends on what you expect from your website.

Where WordPress shines

If you need to change content frequently yourself, run a blog with dozens of articles a month, or want a large editorial system, WordPress handles it and has a huge ecosystem around it.

Where a custom site pays off

For a company presentation, portfolio or sole trader’s website, WordPress tends to be unnecessarily heavy. Templates and plugins pull in a lot of code that slows the site down, requires regular updates and is a frequent target of attacks. A custom site, by contrast, is lightweight, loads instantly and has nothing to update.

Costs you don’t see right away

With WordPress, budget for hosting, paid plugins and maintenance. A custom site built as static pages can run on the cloud for free and last for years unchanged. Before deciding on the build price alone, calculate the five-year running cost too.
